From now until September 3, 2014, Hilton is offering 20% off discount when purchasing HHonors points. You can buy up to 40,000 HHonors points per calendar year.

After the discount, it is $0.008 cents per each points. Many points travellers say that it is not a really good deal. It should be worth buying if each points value below 0.5 cents. However, I have checked few Category 1 properties which purchasing points is actually cheaper than the paid rate.
I have looked at the rate on DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Chongqing Wanzhou(See below screenshot). It’s a Category 1 property so you can book a free night there for just $40 worth of purchased points, while paid rates are usually closer to $100(Advancee purchase rate usually around $60-70). And keep in mind if you redeem for four nights, the fifth night is free, so that can lower the pro-rated cost to $32 per night.
I also checked on the rate for Conrad Macau for 2 Aug to 3 Aug, a weekend stay at this property is usually so expensive. However if you directly purchase 40,000 HHonors points (Cost USD320), it is cheaper than all the rates displayed. Even there is no 20% off discount on purchasing HHonors points, directly purchase points to stay in Conrad Macau still a better option.
My conclusion
The points are worth buying if you check the HHonors Points or the points and money options are cheaper than the usual rate. Please also note that the HHonors Points option does not require you to pay tax but for points and money option, you need to pay tax on this rate.
